ASA or PETG? An honest decision in two questions

Does the part sit in direct sunlight for months? ASA (£0.10/g) is the answer — it’s the UV-stable sibling of ABS, made for exactly this: colours stay put and the surface doesn’t go chalky and brittle the way most plastics do in sun.

Shaded, intermittent or budget-led? PETG (£0.07/g) handles rain, damp and temperature swings well and costs less. Its one weakness is long-term direct UV — over seasons of full sun it can slowly yellow and lose toughness. Under a gutter, inside a shed, on a north wall: PETG is the sensible buy.

And the one to avoid outside: PLA. It’s our cheapest material and brilliant indoors, but it softens in the kind of heat a conservatory or a parked car reaches on a sunny day, and sunlight degrades it. We’ll never quietly print your outdoor part in it.

Design details that make outdoor parts last

Material choice does most of the work, but three design habits stretch an outdoor part’s life further: give water somewhere to go (a drainage hole beats a puddle), use stainless fixings through printed holes rather than printed threads for anything load-bearing, and add a little extra wall thickness — at £0.07–0.10 per gram, an extra 20 grams of strength costs pennies.

Which 3D printing material is best for outdoor use?

For direct sunlight, ASA — it’s UV-stable, so it keeps its colour and toughness where other plastics fade and go brittle. For shaded or occasional outdoor use, PETG is nearly as capable and slightly cheaper. We stock both, and the quote lets you compare them on your actual part.

Will a 3D printed part fade or crack in the sun?

Depends entirely on the material. ASA is made for sun and holds up season after season. PETG tolerates weather well but can slowly yellow in years of direct UV. PLA degrades outdoors and softens in trapped heat — we don’t print outdoor parts in it.

Are 3D printed parts waterproof?

Weatherproof, yes — rain, splashes and damp are no problem for ASA or PETG. Pressure-tight or submerged sealing is a different claim: FDM layers aren’t guaranteed watertight under pressure, so we won’t promise that.

Can you reprint a broken outdoor part?
